After reviewing the weather forecast for August 12 in the Cajon Pass area, it will be hot. Potentially, a bit over 100 degrees. As such, I am changing the start time of the tour to 8 am instead of 10 am. The start location is still the same in Devore, CA. I know that is a bit of a change, but an earlier start will help with the heat. I strongly recommend bringing water and a hat. If it gets hotter, I may postpone the tour until a later date, most likely September 9.

On August 12, 2017, I will be hosting this websites first highway tour in the Cajon Pass area. This tour will cover the roadway from Verdemont to Cajon Summit. Some portions will have to be skipped, unfortunately, due to fire-related closures. The start of the tour has changed from the initial announcement. It will now begin at Devore, in front of Tony’s Diner at 18291 Cajon Blvd, San Bernardino, CA 92407 at 8 am. Please do not park in their parking lot. There is plenty of on-street and off-street parking in the area.
After a brief introduction, we plan to leave at about 8:30 am. The tour will stop at the following locations:
Cajon Blvd (at the freeway)
Debris Cone Creek
Additional stops may be added if needed. I strongly recommend bringing water and snacks as there are few water/food stops along the route. Please RSVP if you plan to attend this tour. Again, we will be leaving the starting point no later than 8:30 am. Please RSVP no later than August 11 so that I can get a rough number of how many will attend. After taking a small poll on this site regarding possible highway tours, the results are in. It would seem that the Cajon Pass area was the most popular. As such, it will be the first tour given. Unless conditions warrant otherwise, the first tour will be on August 12, 2017. It will begin at the San Bernardino Metrolink station at 10 am. While a more exact itinerary will be created in the near future, the tour will cover the highway as well as the geology from the train station to Cajon Summit. The tour will be in a caravan style with specific stopping points. There may be some short hikes as well to see old pavement, alignments, or bridges. There will also be no cost for the tour. Please RSVP as soon as you can so I can get an idea of how many may show. It should be a lot of fun and I hope to see you out there!
While it is still early in the process, I am considering developing some in-person highway tours of some of the historic routes in Southern California. The basic idea thus far is to have specific stops, most likely in a caravan-style tour. The geology and history of the locations will be covered in addition to other fun facts. Which roadway gets picked depends on how the polling goes.

After having done a fair amount of research into how roads in Southern California are tolled and how each agency handles the tolling itself, I decided it was time to add another page to the site. Seeing as how each agency uses FasTrak in a different way and that there are, at least for now, five different agencies, each with their own transponder, in the region, it was time to help clarify some things. On May 20, 2017, I am planning a cleanup of my section on I-5 in Grapevine Canyon. Specifically, this is KER-005-6.0/8.0. For those interested in joining, please send us a message to add your name to the list. The plan, thus far, is to meet in Lebec in the morning and carpool to the cleanup site to reduce the number of vehicles along the roadway. Let us know as soon as possible if you are interested in joining us. A partial tour of the remaining sections of US 99 and the Ridge Route in Grapevine Canyon, including Deadman’s Curve, will also be included in the cleanup.
It has been a while since I’ve added to my US 6 tour. For quite some time, it “only” went to Tonopah, Nevada. While that town makes for a good end point, it left quite a bit of very interesting and scenic highway out of the tour. US 6 across Nevada is one of the emptiest highways in the lower 48 states. It gives travelers and geologists alike a very good cross section of the Great Basin as well as a look at the mining past of Nevada. With that in mind, my US 6 tour now extends to the Utah / Nevada State Line, covering approximately 620 miles of roadway.
I’ve been working on the site a bit lately, and have been making some modifications. No pages are going away, so don’t think that. New pages, however, are coming and older pages are being moved. I am developing a new page (or series depending on where it goes) on southern California’s park lands. In particular, the national, state, and county level parks that help to preserve what this region was before settlement of the lands. This new page (or series) will help to locate these parks and give some information about them.
Due to this new page, I have also decided to consolidate some of the pages on this site into a new “Recreation” page. This will include the kayaking, bicycling, motorcycling, hiking, as well as the new parks page. In time, these pages may expand beyond their current scope to cover more areas. For now, they will remain mostly the same. The menu has already been updated to reflect these new changes, so keep that in mind while you explore this site.
With these particular subjects in mind (kayaking, bicycling, motorcycling, hiking, and parks), let us know if you would like to see any new areas covered by those pages or are looking for more detailed information about what is already covered.
So far, it looks like there is interest in something for US 395 and US 466. As it stands, US 395 at least has something for San Diego County (still in progress) and the current signed route as far as its intersection with State 14 near Inyokern. US 466 is still pending. I am interested in working on a tour, of sorts, of the highway from Bakersfield to Barstow. What I lack to create the tour is photos. I have traversed the route many times but need photos of the route in Barstow, Hinkley, Kramer Junction, Boron, Tehachapi, Keene, Edison, and approaches to Bakersfield. I’m still looking for additional ideas for the site, if there are any. The pages I have talked about thus far will take a while to produce. There is still some research to be done on those roadways.
First, I want to thank all those that donated to the website to help with the cost of keeping the site online. I normally don’t ask for financial help, but this time it was very helpful. So, thank you all again for your support to help keep this site alive. Now, with that in mind, there is another question I have. This site covers quite a bit of subjects. They are covered as I have information about them and am interested in them. I only want to put up the best information available on this site, to ensure that the proper information is being disseminated. With this in mind, here is the question:
What additional information would you like to see on this site? Southern California has much to be covered, and while other sites may offer much better information about certain subjects, I am willing and able to expand the site to offer another take on those subjects (or an expansion of existing subjects covered).
